Secrets to house Train a Dog
When you first get your dog, especially if you purchase an older dog, you may find they are a little skittish for your home and you may have to re-house train the dog. In some cases you will need to incorporate some training tools to help you in most cases with your dog. One way to help your older dog learn the house training and keep down the number of accidents that may occur, would be to learn about cage training.
Crate/cage training an older dog is something that usually does not require much effort, this making it the perfect solution for people who have busy lives or those who aren’t interested in spending a lot of time training their dog.
Older dogs are usually harder to train than younger dogs as they have some habits that will usually hinder them from taking to the training as it would a younger dog. However they can be trained it just make take a little longer. You will need to be extremely consistent with the training of an older dog, especially if you are cage training them. In order for this process to work you will need to follow some very easy steps that must be followed to the letter and kept up on a regular basis.
To start with you need to determine how long you can spend with your dog training him each day. Make sure that whatever amount of time you decide on you can stick to it. For some people, 15 – 20 minutes training your dog each morning fits in best, while for others training at night before bed time is more convenient. Work out what works for you and stick to it. Don’t change the training time or duration until your dog is becoming more proficient.
It’s a good idea to take you dog outdoors as soon as you wake up in the morning. This will give it an opportunity to go to the toilet. Just before your dog is about to go to the toilet, give it a short command such as “Toilet”. Doing this everyday will teach your dog this new command. After you dog has finished its business give it a little praise – not too much, just enough so that it knows its done a good job.
Make sure that you are always firm and consistent with all your commands when house training your dog. You also need to make sure that your dog understands that you are the leader, this will make your dog take you much more seriously.
Crate coaching is important for lots of dogs, not only during housebreaking but for any time that your dog needs to be unsupervised in a scenario where they would misbehave, or when you only need to be left all alone for a bit.
