The Keys to Successful Puppy Training: Patience and Commitment

Taking a new puppy home can be both exciting and stressful: It will certainly become the latter, if the training does not start right away. Remember: The younger the dog is, the more impressionable he is. And molding him from the first minute is much easier than trying to change his behavior later.

Additionally, there are few experiences that create more bonding than training one’s dog. Just keep it fun and always reward your puppy when he does well. If you go about it this will, he will enjoy the training session and will try to get it right.

It is best to always reward with lots of praise, attention, and sometimes treats. For the best results, it is suggested that you start out with treats and then, over time, replace treats with praise.

It is absolutely crucial that you and your dog work on his behavior frequently. Repetition is an absolute must, and you will not succeed without it. Just don’t overdo it.

With young dogs, naturally you cannot expect long attention spans. Plan to not go over five minutes in every training session. As they get older, of course, this will change, and you will be able to work for longer periods of times.

Here is how to teach your dog an easy command: First of all, demonstrate the behavior you desire. Then help your puppy do it, and, in the end, reward him generously for a job well done. Yes, this may seem simple, and it is. But that does not mean that you will not at times need to be quite patient.

Always think about it this way: Some dog, just like humans, are brighter than others. They will pick things up more quickly. And some don’t. That, too, is natural, but you just have to be even more patient.

No two puppies are alike in temperament or ability to learn. Pet owners should stay vigilant when they train and adapt their lessons to the animal’s specific needs.

I can never give in when it comes to your dog training, however, you should also never punish a dog when he misbehaves. Just give him some time to learn and be as patient with him as you can be. Over time, you will find the two of you bonding and having a great time together.
