Overrun With Overweight Dogs?
Majority of Americans do not realize just how far pet obesity stretches and just how many dogs are affected by it. Many Americans have noticed an overweight animal and have disregarded the health factors through quick observation and “fat” jokes. But just like their human owners, a dog with an abundance of additional body fat runs the risk of facing many health issues.
Would it surprise you to learn that 44% of dogs in the U.S. would qualify as overweight or obese? 44% roughly converts into approximately 33 million dogs! That’s almost half of the dogs in the United States that are susceptible to a variety of health factors including liver failure, respiratory problems, joint, bone & ligament damage, heart disease, hypertension and more. All of which can lead to a premature death.
One can’t help but wonder why it is Americans do not do a better job taking care of their pets, after all watch an evening of TV and it’s easy to see there is a certain obsession with dogs. But in reality part of the problem may be that people are taking too good of care of their dogs, or so they believe. People who love their dogs often want to reward their dogs, and how do we reward our dogs? We give them food and often lots of it. Fattening treats and food, table scraps, leftovers, we even place our leftovers in “doggy bags”. We spoil our dogs with treats but often fail to exercise them.
Obesity in dogs and cats continues to lead the causes of preventable death in dogs and cats. Dogs and cats are just as susceptible to the physical ailments of obesity as humans with 25% of overweight dogs suffering from serious joint problems and diabetes being one of the most common complications found in overweight canines. But like humans hypertension (high blood pressure) remains a very serious problem overweight dogs are forced to deal with.
As people learn more about the potential health complications found with pet obesity, many people wish to know what can be done to prevent pet obesity or how to help an already overweight animal. Those with extra money to spend may be tempted to adopt the quick fix approach. The quick fix may include anti-obesity drugs or even liposuction, but as with humans, such approaches may lead to further complications.
As is the case with humans, a good old fashioned change of diet and the addition of an exercise routine is often the best way to turn your overweight doggy friend into a healthy doggy friend. Many pet food companies offer a “low fat” pet food that is good for dogs. Additionally, you can make healthful dog treats right at home. The Amy Stevens’ Cooking4Canines recipe book is full of dog treat recipes that are delicious and nutritious.
Of course when dealing with pet obesity it is important to exercise with your pet. Your dog needs regular exercise just as much as you do. Taking your dog for a walk each day can do wonders for you and your dog. Or if you’re are looking for a new and exciting way to exercise with your pet, Doga Yoga is an option. Dog Yoga, or Doga as it’s often called, is a fun way for you and your dog to exercise together right in the comfort of your own home.
It is important for us as Americans and pet owners to help our pets stay healthy and fit. It is important we show them just how much we love them by providing them with healthy foods and sufficient exercise.
