Thinking About Werewolves – An Exercise In Speculation
Suspend your disbelief. The world is far stranger than anyone imagines. So let’s hypothesize. Could a werewolf be real? Is it possible for a human to take on animal characteristics, in a physical way?
First we have to try and define the word werewolf. There are many different ways of depicting such a creature, which have been imagined in countless books, movies, works of art, and multi media presentations. In general the term werewolf refers to some human that takes on wolf like properties. Usually these properties are physical. Sometimes they are only mental, or psychological, although these wouldn’t really be classed as a supernatural being.
There are several ways that a human could be turned into a werewolf. The easiest and most obvious is magic. Magic is a catch all that can be sued to explain just about anything. Wave a wand and a person becomes a wolf, or vice versa.
Another, more subtle way for a human to become a werewolf is through science. Genetic experimentation could theoretically allow scientists to craft a werewolf from the womb. Using certain surgeries, it might theoretically even be possible to change an existing adult human into a werewolf.
Another possibility is viral or bacterial infection. It might be possible for a microorganism to infect a person, causing they’re cells to mutate in such a way that the person takes on the physical attributes of a wolf.
Then of course you have simple transfiguration. This involves taking the atoms in a body and rearranging them manually, using some sort of field generated by a device. This would theoretically leave the persons personality in tact, while only changing their outward appearance.
While the magic and science of werewolves may not exist right now, as time moves forward we could come to a point where some of these things are possible. It takes the visionaries of imagination to light the path of the future.
