Do Dogs Need Toys?

How does a dog owner know what kind of dog toys to buy for their dog? Knowing information about your dog breed and just knowing your pet and what they “get into” when they are bored should indicate what kind of toy will best suit your dog.

Watching a dog’s behavior as they choose a toy out of toy box or out of a pile of toys is quite interesting. Are they creatures of habit picking the same toy every time or is their choice of toy a random act? Do they take their toy in a quiet sunny spot or look for a playmate? Dogs are so interesting to watch!

Plush dog toys with squeakers seem to satisfy a dog in several ways. They like the soft feel of the plush and the instant gratification of the squeaker. It also draws attention to the playful pup – letting you know its playtime!

Popular medium dog breeds include: Beagle, Basset Hound, Welsh Corgi, Cocker Spaniel and Schnauzer. These breeds tend to weigh 20 lbs to approx 45 lbs. A medium dog toy needs to be large enough so your dog does not choke and small enough to handle with their paws and get their mouth around it.

Dog Breeds like, Labrador Retrievers and Border Collies take pleasure in chasing a ball! What a great form of exercise and quality time play. Veterinarians recommend hard rubber balls, rather than tennis balls. Tennis balls tend to get covered with dirt and sand and grind away dog’s teeth.

All sizes of dogs have strong teeth and want and need to sink their teeth into a chew toy. This is an enjoyable activity for most breeds. Rope toys and durable rubber dog toys satisfy this urge.

Dogs are social creatures and are happy playing with people and toys. Sometimes they need attention, other times they like to find a sunny spot and chew or squeak one of their toys.

A pet store has so many pet supplies, pet toys, dog food and dog treats, it can be overwhelming to find the appropriate pet product for your breed, size and age of your dog. Be sure your pet is safe and never leave your pet unsupervised with a new product.

Do you know what your dog’s choice of toy is? Some dogs are fairly picky about the toys they will play with, while others will chew on just about anything. Joanne Gallagher recommends browsing to Jake’s Dog House to view their vast selection of Dog Toys that vary from plush to flying discs toys.
