Think About This Before Getting A Pet

How many of us have found ourselves in a situation where you are standing there in the pet store with your child awing the little kittens. We tell ourselves we are not going to do it again, but here you are. Watching through the glass at the furry little angels asking yourself what you are doing here again.

Those adorable little pups and kittens can literally speak to you through the glass. Those big sad eyes begging you to take them home. Knowing you are in for the battle of the day just to get out before your child starts to cry pleading for the sad kitty.

We all think that we are going to be the firm responsible parent and just say no. Then before you know it, you are right there, picking a kitten to just pet, and the next thing you know, you are out the door with your newest family member. Is any of this starting to sound familiar?

Is this a situation that sounds too familiar? As parent we do feel that we can control those situations with our children, only to find out we are wrong. We either get caught up in the moment or realize that our kids know us better then we know ourselves.

Back to the responsible parent question, is your family ready for a pet? That’s the hundred thousand dollar question and is asked by families everywhere. There are several factors you need to consider when discussing the addition of a family pet.

As a family you need to sit down and discuss this reasonably before acting spontaneously. Dogs and cats are a big responsibility and with small children the newness wears off quick. Talk about it and then talk about it again before making that big decision.

Getting a pet is a huge responsibility and you don’t want to take it lightly. Pets can be a good addition to your family and enrich your child’s life. They can also teach your children the lesson of being responsible for something, but we all know that can backfire as well.

Long after the kids are gone, the pets are usually still there. The kids are frequently the driving force when the desire for a pet arises. As long as you realize the long commitment involved then I say go for it.

Being a pet owner has great rewards. But it also has long-term commitments that many people are not ready for. So think it through and do your research to for help to determine which type of dog or cat is good for your family.
